My goal is to save people time and energy with minimum frustration as they strive to organize their lives. Through my ongoing struggle to organize my life and successfully fulfill expected roles, the consistent advice given is, “A place for everything and everything in its place.” My question to these advice givers is,
“What to do when life gets in the way of life?”
We all need to reassess our lives one time or another when inevitable changes and unknowns invite themselves into our lives. The consistent challenges are adjusting to life’s road blocks and setbacks and getting back on track when these interruptions happen. Ideally, my goal is to live the most effective life possible; however, none of us are perfect and imperfections exist in us all. So, making mistakes is part of the process the hard part is my willingness and ability to be flexible all while striving to assimilate “the new “ and “the different” that enters all of our lives. Learning and accepting that mistakes and changes are another part of the process of living and organized life.
Take last week’s planned week for example, I was full of confidence and a sense of readiness. However, these feelings quickly evaporated as I learned my car was missing from the line of parked cars. Suddenly, all my planning and foreseeing needed to be reassessed to include the present circumstances. Now my initial goal of arriving to work ahead of time was not on the back burner. Coming to grips with my initial goal not being feasible than came another test for me to adjust and reassess the days agenda.
After reassessing the situation my new initial goal became informing my employer of my new arrival time. Then my attention shifted to finding my car rather than my approaches to successfully accomplishing my morning work tasks. After, several phone calls it became apparent my car was towed by the city of Milwaukee. Learning my car was towed presented a new list of priorities such as how will I get to the tow lot, how much will I need and do I have the money to cover these expensive.
Once all the unforeseen events were addressed my attention shifted back to my original plan of working effectively at my job. All the frustration of the unforeseen circumstances required me to reassess all of my priorities and become adaptable to the changes. So, remember when life gets in the way of life to be ready to be flexible and able to reassess the new, the unknown and the known has part of the process of organization your life.
